Russian pirates lose ground

Russian pirates in 2007 caused damage to the companies - members of the Business Software Alliance in the amount of $ 1.075 billion. This is 133 million dollars less than in 2006. According to the decisions of the courts, the BSA managed to receive only $ 2.6 million in reimbursement from Russian companies - violators, according to Vedomosti.

Last year, the Russian authorities stepped up the fight against piracy. The police identified almost 600 violating companies and filed 264 criminal cases - more than two times more than in 2006, and 17 times more convictions were issued in cases.

It is worth noting that the police also found their own benefit in the arrest of pirates. So, if the damage from the pirate distribution of the program exceeds 50 thousand dollars, the law allows to consider it a grave crime. Thus, law enforcement agencies can significantly “straighten” their own statistics of solved “crimes”.
