Google will lay an intercontinental cable 10,000 km long

Google has officially confirmed the rumors about laying high-speed intercontinental cable that will connect the company's American and Asian data centers. Naturally, Google will not be in control of all backbone bandwidth. Today it became known that five telecommunications companies acted as Google’s partners, so that all Internet users will feel the benefits of improving the infrastructure. In fact, the capacity of the channels from the US to Asia after that will increase by 20% to 7.68 Tbit / s.

A cable with a length of 10,000 km will run along the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The gasket will take more than two years and will be completed only in 2010. The total cost of the project will be $ 300 million. At first, only one pair of cables with a capacity of 960 Gbit / s will be laid, but in the future there is an opportunity to add three more such pairs.

This is the first time in history when an Internet company invests in intercontinental communication channels.
