“And these people forbid us to poke around”: Huawei and the NSA

The NSA scandal does not get tired of giving us discoveries of varying degrees of scall. Here and the German Der Spiegel [ in English ] unearthed the details of the unit "Tailored operations unit" in the NSA and the tools available to them, which allows you to penetrate into various networks and equipment.

The 50-page document that the Germans had dissected is in itself extremely interesting: journalists sarcastically called it "the Otto Spy Directory." There are goodies for any budget - from modified VGA cables for thirty bucks, which give a “spy” image on the monitor from afar, to a “charged” BS cellular communication, codenamed “CANDYGRAM” for $ 40 thousand. However, there is one nice detail ,

In the list of vendors of equipment with backdoors, Cisco, Juniper and ... Huawei are listed, separated by commas:

The irony is that US government agencies put a lot of effort into convincing their own Congress that the network equipment of Chinese companies, such as ZTE and Huawei, could be a threat to national security due to possible “bookmarks.” The suspicions were so strong that Huawei abandoned the American market altogether, limiting themselves to selling phones and USB “whistles”.

And now it turns out that the NSA themselves did what the Chinese reproached by introducing backdoors into the Huawei firewalls:

In fairness, it should be noted that Huawei and ZTE put their wheels in the United States not only because of the fear of “bookmarks” about the unwillingness to allow Chinese people to data centers and critical nodes of American cellular operators and Internet companies. At major tenders, not only the supply of "iron" is played out, but also its introduction by the forces of a large landing force from the vendor's employees. You cannot install a controller on every traveller, and you have to introduce a bunch of confidential information by definition.

But this does not make history less ironic, is it?
