98-year-old negatives found in the Antarctic

At the beginning of the 20th century, an active study of the entire Antarctic region was carried out, and various countries sent expeditions to this zone. In 1914, an expedition was sent, called the detachment of the Sea of Ross , respectively, to the region where the detachment was headed. The expedition was not particularly successful, for the most part due to improper organization and equipment. The results of this expedition would not be worth describing now, if it were not for the random discovery of 22 unprocessed negatives of that time.

The find was made during the reconstruction of ancillary facilities built for the detachment of the Sea of Ross (stocks of food and equipment were kept there, a wintering area was equipped). In one of the premises, those very negatives were found. The part that is closer to the edges of the box was damaged, but the part was preserved quite well.

Modern photographers have already shown negatives, having received excellent photos of Ross Island, and a couple of photos of the expedition leader Alexander Stevens. Here you can look at the recovered photos in a good resolution. I think for many representatives of Khabrasoobshchestvo these photos are of some interest.
