Ton Roosendaal, the founder and one of the authors of the open 3D-editor Blender, dug out the very
first source of the project .
He started it on the eve of Christmas 1993, as a project for internal use in his animation studio, and in early January, the first version of the code was already compiled into something.
First, he began to create a Screen system, a unique interface, different from the typical programs of the time. They opened so many small modal windows with which it was difficult to work and in which it was difficult to navigate.
As an alternative to this approach, Ton decided to create an interface with one main window, parts of which could be assigned dedicated functions. Something similar can now be observed in the latest versions of Blender, where the main window is divided in any convenient way for the user and in any part you can open any part of the editor.
After the first attempts, the project code was marinated for half a year, after which work was continued on it, already on creating a format for saving the scene .blender
In this regard, Ton announced the project’s birthday on January 2, and thus in 2014 he will be 20 years old.
I myself recently became fascinated with the study of this editor, and he makes a very pleasant impression and looks quite professional. And cross-platform (linux, freebsd, windows, mac os x), open code and free project - in my opinion, it's just great.
