The first commercial implementation of the "brain-computer interface"

Devices that use BCI (brain-computer interface) and allow little by little to control a computer with the help of a thought are already a reality . But so far these were only prototypes that are in a state of development or final refinement. But Emotiv showed at the Game Developers Conference 2008 conference a working version of such a system, the commercial implementation of which is scheduled for the end of this year.

Like other developments, Emotiv EPOC is a “helmet” with electrodes that capture signals that accompany the user's mental activity, and specialized software that can process these signals and generate control commands based on them.

According to the information of Emotiv specialists, their device is able to determine simple commands (for example, “right”, “left”, “jump”, “quit”, “pull”, etc.), as well as up to 30 different user states, including emotions and facial expressions. . To set up an EPOC for a specific user, you first need to pass several tests: roughly speaking, to “think hard” the actions proposed by the setup program. Something like the process of calibrating the joystick or “addictive” to the voice of the voice control software.

The system shown at GDC 2008 is a really working prototype, literally a step away from commercial implementation. According to the developers, it will be possible to purchase EPOC, together with a specially developed game for it, at the end of this year. And the cost of this reading machine is set at only $ 299. On the website of the company a pre-order can be made now.
