Internet Archive laid out the classic games of the 70s and 80s for free

In the classic games 30-40 years ago, you can now play directly in the browser and completely free. The Internet Archive collection includes games for the Atari 2600 (1977 release), Atari 7800 (1986), ColecoVision (1982), Philips Videopac G7000 (1978) and Astrocade (1983) consoles.

If anyone forgot, in those days games were released on cartridges, and each console had its own cartridge format. The prefix itself was connected to the TV.

When consoles are outdated and out of use, playing these games became problematic. You can do this on a computer if you install an emulator and load a ROM image into it.

Atari 2600, 510 games
Atari 7800, 77 games
Coleco Colecovision, 235 games
Philips Videopac G7000 (Magnavox Odyssey 2 ), 117 games
Bally Astrocade, 20 games

Another problem was intellectual property rights. Nintendo and Sega companies often banned the distribution of ROM images, calling it production of counterfeit products and initiating criminal proceedings against gamer activists.

Now all games work in any browser and you can play legally. Scroll through the list of 989 available games at this link . Among them are Pacman, Space Invaders, Frogger and many other famous names. So far, the games are running without sound, but the Internet Archive promises to fix it soon.

"In the coming months, the number of available games will be significantly increased," writes Internet Archive employee Jason Scott. He adds that these vintage games are still able to bring joy and pleasure to the players, and they also have historical value.

It can be assumed that now in the era of smartphones, many historical games can get a second life and become popular again.

The collection of games was published as part of the publication of the old software archive , in which you can find a lot of interesting things.
