Google
has filed a lawsuit against the Rockstar consortium, which uses a patent portfolio of obvious inventions to attack numerous manufacturers of mobile devices under the Android operating system, as well as other partners and customers of Google.
The consortium began active operations in October of this year, filing lawsuits against hundreds of companies, including Asustek, HTC, Huawei, LG, Pantech, Samsung and ZTE, demanding license fees from them.
The organization was created by Google’s competitors, including Apple, Microsoft and BlackBerry, which in 2012 were dropped and jointly bought out the patent portfolio of Nortel Networks, a bankrupt Canadian telecom, for $ 4.5 billion. $ 2.5 billion of the total amount contributed by Apple.
Rockstar is a typical patent troll that does not produce any products and does not possess any assets, except for about 4,000 patents. The company uses its intellectual property exclusively in litigations.

The staff of Rockstar has about 100 employees. In addition to lawyers, they are
former Nortel engineers who help to find new targets for judicial attacks. Rockstar CEO John Veschi says that Nortel patents violate all IT companies, including Facebook and LinkedIn.

Given the power of the co-owners of Rockstar, few companies are able to withstand the threat. Google was the first to dare to file a counterclaim, challenging the applicability of patents. The
document lists seven patents: the claimant asks to recognize that the Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 devices do not infringe on these patents. In addition, Google accuses Rockstar of unfair competition, because it "casts a shadow on the Android platform."
The lawsuit lists patents for sharing data exchange (mobile hotspots), messaging and receiving notifications. According to Rockstar, absolutely all manufacturers of Android devices violate these patents.
The case will be tried in San Jose court. In theory, at the time of this trial, claims against Google partners should be frozen. Rockstar lawsuits against hundreds of companies are filed in Texas, which is considered the most loyal court to intellectual property owners. The day before filing claims, Rockstar registered another company MobileStar, to which it can transfer or has already transferred patents (typical practice of patent trolls). At the same time, Rockstar filed lawsuits against Cisco and other communications equipment manufacturers.
