Changes in the rules of the Chrome Web Store: one extension - one function

There are changes in the rules of the Chrome Web Store : now each extension should have one and only one clear purpose. Despite the fact that it was originally meant so, not all extensions complied with this rule. Multifunctional extensions overload the browser interface and slow down its operation. New rules will help to cope with this problem and will allow better control over the work with the browser.

When we started thinking about creating Chrome, many browsers were slow and not very convenient programs. This was due to extensions - toolbars, which not only slowed down the browser, but also piled up right below the address bar. The more useful extensions you installed, the less space left for your favorite sites. Here's what it looked like:

Therefore, we came up with Chrome - a fast and convenient browser, in which nothing will prevent you from surfing the Internet. We developed the key principles of Chrome and decided that extensions should follow a simple rule: one extension is one function. Each of them can place only one element in the browser interface, for example a button. We also decided to abandon support for toolbars and make it easier for users to select exactly the extension that they need at the moment.

But, unfortunately, not all developers followed our rules. C using content scripts that allow you to change the look of the pages, toolbars and extensions with dubious features were created. Came to the aid of users who leave negative reviews in the online store Chrome. Before downloading the extension, you could read the review and refuse to install it.

However, this was not always the case. Sometimes extensions got to the computer along with the programs that you downloaded from the Internet. In this case, you could not even read the reviews and objectively assess whether to install the extension.

It is for these reasons that we changed the rules of the Chrome Web Store and discard the multifunctional extensions. This means that part of the existing extensions will need to be finalized, and instead of some even create several separate extensions. To make a profit, some developers may need to change the monetization scheme (this is very simple, because now we support several payment options ). In any case, do not worry: you will have enough time to make all the necessary changes. Although the updated rules already apply to new extensions, they will only enter into force for existing extensions in June 2014.
