Egyptians against minaret antennas

Egypt's Mufti Sheikh Ali Gumaah allowed mobile phone companies to install signal amplifiers on mosque minarets. A large field for cooperation opens up for telecom business and clergy, reports Nezavisimaya Gazeta - the installation of amplifiers will bring in mosques an income of $ 7,000 annually.

Sheikh Ali Gumaa argued his fatwa (theological-legal conclusion) by the fact that there are no provisions in the Shari'ah that prohibit the use of minarets for purposes other than calls for prayer. However, experts on Islamic law and other representatives of the elite strata of Egyptian society are opposed to his decision. According to the newspaper, religious building is perceived by believers as a sacred object, a symbol of eternity. Therefore, the antenna on it is perceived as a concession to this world.
