$ 200,000 to anyone who hacks the Telegram IM messenger

Exhausted by doubts from the community of developers and cryptographers about the robustness of the MTProto cryptographic protocol used in the Telegram , Pavel Durov decided on an extreme measure. He announced a reward of $ 200,000 to anyone who "decrypts Telegram traffic and tells how he did it." Details of the competition are being worked out.

“As far as I can see, there are not so much Anonymus as the creators of a local competitor, TextSecure for Android,” Durov is trying to identify the critics from the above discussion . - Telegram gathered a lot of users, and they rightly fuss. The guys are torn between the argument "Your algorithm is too new, why is it if there are proven ones" and the position "Your algorithm is too old, why is it if there are new ones."

I think a good end to the debate will be the announcement of a competition to decrypt Telegram traffic. Let's say I am ready to open the traffic of all my correspondence from the moment of registration in Telegram and hand over $ 200,000 to anyone who decrypts it and tells you how. As a result, Telegram will either find and close a loophole for the special services, or - more likely - will get another proof of the inviolability of its protocol. ”

Who does not know, Telegram is a new free IM-messenger created for the foreign market on the model of WhatsApp. Lead developer and one of the creators of the new MTProto IM protocol is Nikolai Durov. The project is developing as an independent enterprise under the wing of the California startup Digital Fortress, whose director is Pavel Durov. The program is distinguished by exceptional speed, user-friendly interface, and end-to-end encryption of messages in secret chats, with support for self-destructive messages that leave no trace on the Telegram server.

The official FAQ says that Telegram is “a more secure alternative to WhatsApp.” Traffic is protected before being transferred to cloud hosting using AES256, RSA 2048 and Diffie-Hellman key exchange protocol.

The first Telegram version for iOS was released on August 14, 2013 (only in English), the Android version - October 20, 2013. Now clients are being created for Mac OS X and Windows by independent developers. Third-party clients will be able to work through open APIs .

The developers promise that the program will always remain free and will never show ads. If they run out of money, they will turn to users for donations.

UPD. A new FAQ for “technically advanced” users has just been published on the Telegram website.

UPD2 19.12. Official press release with the terms of the competition.
