Consider a display with Assertive Display technology in the Nokia Lumia 1520

Our flagship smartphone Nokia Lumia 1520, presented at the Nokia World conference in Abu Dhabi, has finally reached Russia. In this smartphone, many innovations have been implemented both in technical and in software. Today we decided to tell a little about how the 6-inch screen with the adaptive Assertive Display technology, first used in Nokia smartphones, is arranged.

Technical features of the Lumia 1520

But first, let us remind you of what the Nokia Lumia 1520 is. This is our new flagship smartphone (if it is convenient - “phablet”), running on Windows Phone 8, and already with the Nokia Black update (which we will describe in detail in the future).

Since the Nokia Lumia 1520 was originally conceived as the main flagship device, it received a powerful and modern stuffing. For example, the smartphone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2 GHz quad-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, built-in storage with a capacity of 32 GB, which can be supplemented by a slot for MicroSD memory cards (cards up to 64 GB are supported).

To all this, you can add 7 GB of free cloud storage issued by SkyDrive. It is convenient to use, for example, for group work with office documents or for backup of photos taken on a 20-megapixel camera.

By the way, the 20-megapixel PureView camera works on technology that is already used in the 41-megapixel smartphone Nokia Lumia 1020. The camera is equipped with an optical stabilization system, and in order to shoot the video obtained the highest quality, the smartphone has four highly sensitive microphones.

Nokia Lumia 1520 works both with a familiar 3G connection and with LTE networks.

Assertive display

But back to the screen. The Nokia Lumia 1520 is equipped with a 6-inch IPS - screen with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080), an aspect ratio of 16: 9 and a pixel density of 368 pixels / inch.

As in many other models, the Nokia Lumia 1520 display is made on technology ClearBlack. The essence of this technology lies in the fact that between the Gorilla Glass and the display there are special polarizing and inhibiting layers. They repeatedly change the wave characteristics of the light beam. As a result, when light passes through these layers, they block all glare.

The principle of operation technology ClearBlack

Taking into account the experience of past models, in developing the first flagship "phablet" Nokia engineers did not confine themselves to just ClearBlack and turned to Apical, the company that developed Assertive Display technology.

The Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 925 and Lumia 1020 implemented a high-brightness mode and a high readability algorithm in the sunlight, which improved the perception of information from the display on the street ,” commented Jussi Ropo, Nokia manager for display and touch technologies. “ Despite the results, we were still not completely satisfied with the characteristics and knew that they could be improved. After reviewing the various options, we concluded that the Apical Assertive Display algorithm best meets our needs . ”

The essence of Assertive Display technology is that it helps the display to adjust to the lighting conditions. Involving complex video processing algorithms based on the principles of human vision, the display of a mobile device continuously changes its parameters, providing a stable and high-quality image in any conditions.

Instead of changing the brightness of the entire display according to one set of parameters, the Assertive Display on the Lumia 1520 adjusts the levels of individual pixels to make the screen more readable. If the content on the screen on the right is darker than on the left, the pixels on each side will be stimulated differently to maximize both visibility and quality. The result is a screen that is most responsive to the environment.

Assertive Display technology on a standard monitor

Assertive Display technology allows you to keep the contrast at 1000: 1 in bright sunlight, while in traditional displays this value is approximately equal to 10: 1. As an example, we can cite this video, immediately noting that it was made by a private user and is not of an advertising nature:

Another positive aspect of this technology is that the displays of devices with Assertive Display support, according to Apical, consume on average 30–50% less energy than traditional displays. This can not affect the reduction of the battery consumption of the mobile device.

At the end of the post, we would like to ask the hardware community: what do you think about the display of the Nokia Lumia 1520 and about the device as a whole? Tell us in the comments what features you are most interested in, whether such a mobile device format is convenient for you and could you change your current device to the flagship Lumia.
