National Geographic has posted over 500 historical maps on Google Maps Engine

National Geographic and Google are now running a small project to recreate maps of past centuries in digital form. As part of this project, several hundred historical maps were posted on the Web, using the Google Maps Engine platform. These cards, according to the project initiator, National Geographic Director for Digital Development Frank Biasi, have been collected for many years, and now they are available to everyone.

True, accessible to all maps are not laid out in the highest resolution, HD versions of maps will be available in digital form only for money. However, what has been done can be important, both for historians and for all those who are simply interested in historical science.

Paid versions will be available through the application for iOS.

It is worth noting that the maps are available as an additional layer for Google Maps, and you can look at all this here . The project team loaded the data in digital form, created layers, merged the layers into maps, and the maps are made up of scattered “pieces” that exist in the paper version.

On the resulting cartographic material, the project team also posted links to various historical documents, scientific articles and so on.
