PISA (Program for International Assessment) is an international program conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to monitor the level of basic knowledge of young people aged 15 years from 65 countries, including Russia. The study is conducted every three years, it assesses skills and knowledge in three main areas - reading, scientific literacy and mathematics (by "reading" refers to the ability to read and understand what is written). In other words, this study is qualitatively different from olympiads or similar contests, which are focused on the “pinpoint” identification of “geniuses” - here the authors are interested in just a more general result.
Since the last publication in 2009, 510,000 adolescents participated in PISA, which showed the results presented in the table:
As is easy to see, China is in the first place, as in 2009, which suggests a certain qualitative change in the system of secondary education in the region, which correlates with the general idea of the growing role of the South Asian region in the world. So the joke that it makes sense to learn Chinese next to English can soon become a joke. ')
Also, although there is little sense in such a comparison, it is difficult not to note that the Russian Federation in the study took 34th place, ahead of the United States by 2 points.
