This photo shows a car that uses aluminum as fuel.

This car was one of the most interesting exhibits of the ENES-2013 energy-saving technology exhibition.

This is an ordinary American electric golf car Gem-car EL with a very unusual source of electricity, developed at the joint high-temperature institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The electrochemical generator uses such aluminum plates as fuel.

44 plates with a total weight of about 4 kilograms are loaded into special cassettes.

When the generator is running, the pump drives the NaOH alkali through the cassettes with aluminum plates (http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium hydroxide).
The battery has a capacity of 37 kWh and allows you to drive 380 kilometers in urban cycle mode.

The battery can not provide very large currents, so it is used to charge LiIon-batteries, which run the engine.
In addition to electricity, the generator produces heat, which can be used to heat the passenger compartment.
After the depletion of aluminum plates, you must replace them and the electrolyte in the battery. The most interesting thing is that 90% of aluminum can be recovered from spent electrolyte, and the recovery process is similar to obtaining aluminum from ore.
The cost of aluminum is now $ 2.5-4 per kilogram. Even if aluminum is not renewed from the electrolyte, the cost of fuel is 3-4 rubles per kilometer in the urban cycle, which is quite comparable with gasoline.
At the stand I was presented with a book about this technology, which was prepared for Dmitry A. Medvedev, who visited the exhibition the day before me and unfortunately did not reach the stand with the electric car.

In my opinion the technology is very interesting. Who knows, maybe in ten or twenty years, the whole world will drive aluminum cars.
