Internet Systems Consortium has tested the performance of the BIND DNS server on different OSs. Honestly, the results struck me - I did not expect such a spread.

PS By the way, I personally recommend using djbdns as a DNS server, not BIND - for security reasons, although I’m sure that it also outperforms BIND in performance (I tested it many years ago and I don’t think the situation has changed).
