How to use pirates to your advantage

The Polish book publisher recently released a translation of David Kaplan's book Homeland.Carrie's Run, a prequel to the famous spy series Rodina (in the Lostfilm version). Since the topic is rather specific (2006, Beirut, Kerry Methison) and is intended for an audience familiar with the events of the original TV show, the publishing house has acted unusually to promote the book.

The distribution of illegal episodes of “Motherland” in Poland is handled by a certain group “ Hatak ”, which also deals with the Polish localization of the subtitles of the series. According to rough estimates, the weekly audience of the show, preferring to hear the real voices of the actors and not wait for the voice acting, is about 4,000 people. It was their managing director of the publishing house Maciej Migda and decided to use it to promote the book.

Employees of the publishing house contacted the Motherland release group, which is engaged in translating subtitles, and offered to include a plain text line during the screen saver. It turned out unobtrusively and to some extent similar to the text advertising Google - something like this:

"How it all began. You will learn from the book ... "

In the release group they say that such cooperation is not even an advertisement at all, but simply a desire to acquaint the Motherland fans with events preceding the release of Sergeant Brody and his exposure to the CIA. At the same time, both sides benefited - the publishing house got direct access to its audience (more interested people than who download the still not voiced show, you will not find), but on the other hand - the release group received another source of funding at minimal cost with its parties.
