Amazon S3 has disconnected for two hours and will pay for it.

The most reliable hosting in the world, Amazon S3 , and at the same time the related service Amazon EC2 went down on Friday morning. Together with them, hundreds of websites and web services disconnected, mostly Web 2.0 startups that use S3 hosting services. Among others, for example, it is Twitter and bloghosting WordPress. In particular, Twitter stores S3 static files of users on S3, so that at the time of the accident microblogs had such a funny look .

The S3 disconnection occurred on Friday morning, at about 4:30 p.m. Pacific time (3:30 pm Moscow time). The consequences of the accident were almost completely eliminated by 7:00, that is, in two and a half hours, but this is quite enough to cast doubt on the reliability of the “infrastructure for web startups” that Amazon is trying to build. Such services should have an uptime of 99.999%.

The previous failure in the Amazon services system occurred in October last year, when some EC2 customers lost part of their files. After this incident, Amazon made a special guarantee agreement , under which it undertakes to pay compensation to all its customers if uptime of S3 hosting for a certain month is less than 99.9% (i.e. downtime should not exceed 43 minutes in 30 days). Well, in March, the company will definitely have to fork out.
