Datacenter Railways

On a small street near the Embankment Canal embankment stands a building that stands out only a mysterious structure on the roof.

After the “InfoTrans 2013” conference , I was able to go where the journalist had not walked - at the St. Petersburg Information Center of Russian Railways . This is one of the three large data centers of Russian Railways, managing all the railways of the country.

The Information and Computing Center has many different services and control rooms, many of which are on duty around the clock. These are dispatch lines, ticketing systems, a data center, passenger support call centers and railway services.

The center manages all the railway automation processes - from ticket sales to train traffic control and accounting of transported goods.

Four large complexes are consolidated in the data center:

• ASOUP - automated system of operational traffic management, providing operational information on the location and condition of locomotives, wagons, containers, locomotive crews. It also includes a separate ACS GP system - freight transportation of five railways.
• Express - a ticket sales complex of 12 roads (North-West, Siberia, the Urals).
• ASU FR - financial resources of eight roads.
• ACS TR - labor resources of eight roads.

In addition, ACS T systems work in the center - operations with locomotives, ACS Stations - the formation and dispatch of trains, the distribution of the movement of trains along tracks.

It handles all operations for the sale of tickets of three regions - North-West, Ural and Siberian.

Ticket sales through the box office and the Internet is now served by the same system. This is what a cashier’s terminal looks like. These are installed in all railway ticket offices of the country.

Interestingly, the authorization of the cashier occurs on the key Touch Memory. Exactly the same keys are used in intercoms.

Dispatcher communication lines. Behind a noise-proof wall made of ordinary plastic windows and doors, there is equipment that allows the data center to communicate with other computer centers and Russian Railways objects throughout Russia.

The heart of any data center - server room.

There are more than fifty server racks with mainframes, blade servers, drives, backup systems and network equipment. The hall was built in 2007, but is constantly being retrofitted with new equipment.

The pride of the data center - IBM Z196 mainframes installed last year. The power of these computers is such that each rack even has its own additional air conditioning system. By the way, this is the first Z196 installed in Russia.

An interesting observation: in recent years, the server racks, which almost no one ever sees, have a design. Now many of them are not gray cabinets, but practically works of art.

From the depths of the data center a classic system administrator appears with a keyboard in his hands.

The work of the server room is continuously monitored by two dispatchers.

All important systems are duplicated and in case of failure the load can be quickly transferred to backup servers. The dispatcher team regularly trains, transferring the load to the backup systems in test mode.

I visited several data centers in different cities of our country, and every time I admire people who invented systems of such complexity and power, and I also admire people who make such systems work and understand how it all works.
