University timetable s01e02: Windows phone, mobile site and how to help us

In the previous series

We are doing a project with mobile applications "Schedule of universities on mobile phones . " Which primarily shows students their study schedule. It is unique in that it is not an organizer, in which one group of schedules added the schedule - we add schedules with entire departments and universities, 62 universities in Russia were added, and even hooked on Ukraine.

Windows phone

We managed to release a version for Windows Phone. It was possible, because it was not easy. Investors did not give money for this platform, we found Anton Sizikov return_true , who ordered to “do something in this direction” at Habré. As a result, Anton did-do and at the beginning of November released our mobile app “University timetable” on Windows Phone.



Closer to the release, we began to look at what is happening in the country with WP-smartphones. Directly , they write that according to research, the share of Windows Phone in Russia was 8%, the figure is almost as serious as iOS. Around the world, they talk about the share of 9.5% . Another question is that these are mainly Nokia smartphones, whose users are not the fact that they are used to using mobile applications. But these are just suspicions, there are no statistics, we will be happy to hear comments from WP users, and to those who have watched the use of WP-smartphones from others. The WP version lags behind the Android and iOS versions in terms of functionality, but we must confess that we are glad at least to such an application where you can easily and conveniently view your schedule.

Mobile site

It often seems that experience and professionalism is the ability to ask good questions to others and to oneself. In October, my friend Yandex manager asked me a question: “why do you have no mobile site?”. I could not answer this question, I could only come home, discuss with a partner and send the task to work. After 3-4 weeks, a mobile site appeared.



It is clear that a mobile site is not at all the same as a mobile application. And not least because the application icon is a fast-working bookmark that users are too lazy to put in mobile browsers. They made the site without javascript, the easiest, so that on the most simple phones it works as it should.

We made it for several reasons:
1) To share our service with friends in a mobile application - it would be nice to show your friends a working service that automatically detects the type of mobile platform and offers to install an application for it.

2) If there are desperate Internet users on the phones not
Android, non-iOS, non-WP. I think that there is at least some percentage of those who use Samsung Bada and Symbian. At the same time, let's see what else students who use our service use.

3) The mobile site can be used as the basis for the Vkontakte application, and in fact, as a web application for the desktop, it also looks quite good:
