Electronic devices can be used in flight in the USA and Europe.

Good news, everyone!

The message that the FAA is reviewing the rules for using gadgets in airplanes was met quite emotionally by the habrasoobschestvom. Therefore, I hasten to share good news. In the USA and Europe, passengers will be able to use portable electronic devices at all stages of flight.

On October 31, the official website of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published a press release stating that soon passengers will be able to read e-books, play games and watch videos on their devices at all stages of flight with very limited exceptions. . It is at the time of take-off and landing electronic devices, books and magazines must be located in the pocket of the front seat. Mobile phones must be in flight mode with disabled network functions (the icon with the signal reception scale is not displayed) and cannot be used for voice communication. That is, to make a phone call, as before, is prohibited. If there is Wi-Fi on board, it can also be used. You can also use Bluetooth headsets, such as wireless keyboards, for example.

It will take some time to implement these changes in real flights. The FAA has issued a special guide for airlines. Based on this guideline, airlines must change internal documents and procedures, new audits of which, in turn, must be approved by the FAA.

As far as I understand, this does not mean that all airlines will be allowed to use mobile devices on all aircraft. The FAA did not prohibit doing this before, but demanded that airlines ensure the safety of such use, without specifying how to do it. It was easier for airlines to ban everything. Now, a special PED ARC commission conducted research, an official report was published , and the FAA published a guide for airlines on how to allow the use of portable electronic devices in flight. Apparently, for new aircraft certified after 2007, there should be no problems, but some old aircraft may not meet all the requirements.

Following the FAA, on November 13th, the European Aviation Safety Agency EASA also published a press release , according to which until the end of November a guide for European airlines will be published to allow the use of personal electronic devices such as tablets, smartphones, e-books, mp3- players, as well as devices in the "Flight Mode" or "Airplane Mode". In the long term, EASA plans to certify the use of mobile phones on board for making voice calls.

UPD: In the comments there are questions about the ban on takeoff and landing.
First, the ban is not said anywhere. It is said that the devices should be in the seat pocket. That is, listening to music from the phone is not prohibited.
Secondly, on the news sites they write that it is necessary to remove heavy objects in your pocket. This is logical, but in the original it is not.
Thirdly, I’m not sure that I correctly translated the phrase " Electronic items, books and magazines, ". Perhaps it is meant that these items must either be held in hand or put in a pocket .
