Mobile Platform on Intel® Atom ™ Fifth Generation - Merrifield

In February 2013, Intel® officially unveiled the new Intel® Atom ™ Clover Trail + platform. A number of devices have appeared on this platform, including the Samsung Ativ Tab 3 tablet running Windows 8 . Now, closer to the end of the year, we can already say that Intel® has declared itself as a promising and ambitious player in the mobile device market and in the coming time will try to expand its presence in the market by improving performance with a well-known Tic- tock .

What is known today?
The successor to SoC CloverTrail + will be a solution based on SoC Merrifield (22nm), which was already shown to the public in September this year at the Intel Developer Forum .

What is interesting is its Silvermont architecture with significantly lower power consumption (some analysts say the numbers are 4.7 times smaller than their predecessor, Saltwell), as well as, unlike their predecessors, using the default Intel® Atom ™ microarchitecture for optimizing compilations. , for Merrifield in particular and for Silvermont in general, a separate key is available for gcc / Android NDK / LLVM / ICC –march = slm and -xatom_sse4.2 for ICC, including optimizations :
Besides moderate OOOE capabilities, Silvermont is better than
the atom v1 uarch in the following ways
- branch misprediction penalty is 3 cycles shorter
- cache misses are now non-blocking (up to 8 outstanding misses)
- far fewer instructions are microcoded
- can decode 2 x87 instructions in one cycle
- no penalty decoding non-branch following branch
- no ADD vs LEA.
- dedicated integer multiplier in integer section.
- special handling of zeroing idioms
- store forwarding is significantly improved

Including this architecture - Intel® Atom ™ Silvermont - will be based on the BayTrail SoC , designed for use in tablet computers .

A detailed description can be found in the manuals on the links above, as well as described a rather well described architecture and their comparison on Tom's Hardware Guide .

Assessing the previous experience of the release of devices with the announced SoC, we can assume that the first and top devices from vendors are likely to appear next year. And I would like to expect as interesting and respectable models as the Lenovo K900 for smartphones for CloverTrail +.

Following the Intel® Atom ™ Silvermont microarchitecture in 2014, Intel® plans to announce the Intel® Atom ™ Airmont (14nm), which you can only speculate about.

SoC (Anniedale / Cherryview) devices based on the Airmont microarchitecture will be code-named Moorefield (for smartphones) and Cherry Trail (for tablets). Morganfield / Willow Trail , scheduled for 2015, will be based on Goldmont’s next generation architecture at Broxton SoC.
