Smartphone from Railways: dot the i

My story about the smartphone-mobile terminal of the Russian Railways ( http://habrahabr.ru/post/201422 ) caused a huge resonance. There are dozens of publications on the Internet that used my photos.

Today I will talk about everything that I managed to learn about the smartphone from different sources - from Russian Railways to the contract developer and manufacturer.

')

Development

Many have thought that at the heart of the Russian Railways smartphone is some kind of Chinese smartphone and this is almost the OEM model of an unknown Chinese manufacturer. In fact, everything is not so. The housing, the circuit and the smartphone board were designed specifically for this project. Circuit design is based on the reference design of the manufacturer of the processor - the company Quallcom.

All major components of the smartphone are made to order. This is a battery, camera, touchscreen, not to mention all the contacts, antennas, moisture protection membranes, various gaskets and stickers.

Here, for example, a 5-megapixel camera module with autofocus and flash. PM450 is the engineering number of the Russian Railways smartphone.

Production

R-Style acted as a system integrator. The contract developer and manufacturer is a Russian company whose name I was asked not to name. The smartphone was manufactured in China to order.

Technical specifications

The R-Style website contains a photograph of a prototype, released a year ago, and its technical parameters: www.r-style.com/products/FRMD101A .

The actual parameters of the smartphone are different from what is posted on the site:

Cost of

The main reason for the hype around the smartphone from Russian Railways on the Internet is its price. At the exhibition, they called me a rather low cost, but it turned out that a smartphone would be inexpensive with further production, but the first batch of 330 pieces cost much more - 47,000 rubles each, because the cost of the first batch included development costs and many unobvious expenses:

• Development of the circuit board of the main board;
• Development of hull design;
• A set of molds for the housing;
• A set of molds for the docking station and the battery housing;
• A set of stamps for the manufacture of metal contacts and prototyping;
• Development of software for touchscreen drivers, battery controller, USB port, barcode scanner;
• Provision of software source codes, support;
• Registration of a declaration of conformity of the means of communication with the Federal Telecommunications Agency.

In total, these costs amounted to about 300 thousand dollars. Any experienced production worker will say that for such a project it is very cheap.

Production of the first batch of 350 pieces, including 20 samples for debugging, including the cost of components, production, assembly and testing cost about 160 thousand dollars, that is, per 48 out of 330 units purchased, $ 485.

The party was small, so the cost of development, included in the price of the first smartphones, triple the price.

With further orders, the price of a smartphone with its level of security and equipment is very low. For comparison, here is the cost of similar security devices:

CASIO DT-X30 - 60000 rub.
Pidion BIP-5000-B7 - 45000 rub.
Symbol MC9590 - 70000 rub.
M3 Green MC-6500 - 46000 rub.
DATALOGIC FALCON X3 - 58000 rub.
Technique-Service Pendant - 60000 rubles.

Differences from the consumer phone

You should not compare the Russian Railways mobile terminal with conventional smartphones. It has another purpose and another design: it is an industrial protected device that can withstand harsh operating conditions (frost, snow, rain, shock). It is certified IP54, but it is argued that it fully complies with IP67, it’s just not certified for this protection class yet. In the smartphone, a resistive touchscreen is used specially (and not at all from the economy), which allows you to press the screen with any objects and gloved hands. The smartphone has a laser barcode scanner installed (yes, in living conditions barcodes can be scanned with the camera, but the laser is faster and more reliable). The karterder allows to identify the user and work with the electronic signature. To charge the battery using a charging cup.

Perspectives

Now they are testing a smartphone on the railway network, upon their completion it will be decided to purchase a large batch of smartphones or the need to refine the model.

I will give three more photos of the insides of the smartphone. All of them are published for the first time.

In addition to articles on Habré, I write every day in my blog Blog1.rf ( Blog1rf.ru , ammo1.livejournal.com ).
First of all, a blog about technology: I write reviews, share experiences, talk about all sorts of interesting things. Basically it is not in the format of Habr, so I write only there.
