Liberator recognized as a deadly weapon

The already well-known Liberator pistol that can be printed on a 3D printer, the Bureau for the Control of the Sale of Tobacco, Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - ATF) has been recognized by the United States as a lethal weapon.

Bureau experts did just that - they downloaded gun CAD files freely available on the Internet, printed the required number of weapons and conducted tests. As a result, it turned out that the bullet of the 38th caliber, released from the Liberator, is able to penetrate several inches of human flesh, inflicting damage to vital organs and even pierce the skull - however, the distance to the target and how clothing affects the effectiveness of the shot is not indicated. .

In the US, there is the Undetectable Firearms Act , which prohibits the manufacture, sale and transfer of firearms if they cannot be reliably detected by a metal detector (that is, contain at least 3.7 ounces - just over 100 grams - of steel). However, although the Liberator contains a metal part that makes it legal in the US weapons, it does not affect its fighting qualities and can be easily removed from the gun. This fact, together with the officially recognized danger, makes Liberator a very attractive tool for solving very specific problems.

Along the way, the Bureau confirmed the well-known fact that shooting from a printed weapon may be unsafe. For testing, several types of starting material were used - plastic made by Visijet and ABS plastic .
