The Rockstar consortium, which includes companies such as Apple, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Sony and Ericsson, sued a number of Android-smartphone manufacturers: Google, Samsung, LG, ASUS, HTC, Pantech, ZTE and Huawei. They are accused of violating seven patents describing advertising message substitution algorithms depending on the user's search query.
In 2011, Google tried to acquire patents owned by Nortel, offering $ 900 million, and later raising the price several times brought it to $ 4.4 billion. However, Rockstar offered the best conditions and purchased them for $ 4.5 billion in early 2012. Then Google focused on Motorola and bought it for $ 12.5 billion
Rockstar is demanding compensation, and the lawsuit stresses: “Despite Google’s failure to acquire Nortel’s patents, it has infringed and continues to infringe patents on purpose.” It is noted that in this case, the amount of payments can be significantly increased.
A Google spokesman declined to give any comments, other members have not yet commented on the situation.
