Wired: “HDTV is about nothing” (“High-definition television is clearly irrelevant”)

They sent me a curious link to an article in Wired HDTV: What's wrong with this picture?
Digital technology is a development license ... When someone argues about the number of scan lines, frame rate or aspect ratio of the television screen of the future, you can be sure that they are discussing the least significant piece of the puzzle. What they should talk about that carry a digital technology and the enormous changes that will affect the way information delivery and entertainment. Namely, the future of the video is not different from audio or data; it will only be a bitstream.

Surprisingly, this article, written 15 years ago , has not lost its relevance. Yes, HD has become a reality - we can watch movies in excellent HD quality on large screens, but we are still tied to the on-air TV network, we still have to watch what we show and when we show, but not what we want and when we want. DVR - dinosaurs evolution of video recorders - solve this problem partly, but this is a dead end. The future is undoubtedly behind the technologies and solutions that deliver video via Internet channels directly to the TV screen. BBC iPlayer , Apple TV , Joost , etc. - New technologies are already on the horizon and very soon television will become completely different.

HD is great, but if all channels start broadcasting in HD, it will not make much difference and will not make television more attractive. Leave the current quality, but give me the opportunity to watch what I want and when I want. And in HD I will watch my favorite movies.
