Today, the Mozilla blog has news about the launch of a pilot project of the Mozilla Location Service , the purpose of which is to provide geolocation using WiFi and base stations of cellular operators.
Although similar commercial solutions already exist such as geolocation from Google, there is not a single truly large-scale yet open service. This is exactly what the Mozilla foundation is about to fix. Now there is very little data in the database and I doubt that this can be used. For example, my location was determined in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere east of Brazil. But owners of Android phones can do their bit by installing the point-based data collection app .
You can follow the results on the map and in the user rating . In addition, there are global statistics with motivating graphs.
