Will Opera Mobile be free?

The planned for the near future release of Opera Mobile 9.5 has stepped up the interest of the general public to the mobile version of the Norwegian browser, causing a number of interesting questions. In particular, many are interested in what happened to the planned release of Opera Mobile 9.0. Dany Goldman gives his explanations on this topic in his blog on OperaWatch.com. In fact, everything is very simple: the new mobile version works on the Presto engine, which is basic for the desktop version 9.5 and for the opera SDK, which allows the development of specialized Opera versions for non-standard devices. Thus, it is quite logical that the new version bears the same number as the desktop one - after all, this numbering fully corresponds to the company's strategy of providing the same Internet experience to all Opera browser users, regardless of platform. By the way, additional screenshots of the new Opera Mobile 9.5 can be viewed in the official press release of Opera Software.

It is noteworthy that with the release of this version of the mobile browser on the network, conversations began about the possible free Opera Mobile in the near future. The fact is that at the moment it is the only browser from the entire Opera line (with the exception of the built-in specialized versions for devices), which remains paid. Meanwhile, other browser developers are increasingly actively entering the mobile market, including free or generally distributed under free licenses. In this regard, experts expect Opera Software to repeat the step, similar to the desktop version, and make Opera Mobile free. I can add that in private conversations with the leadership of Opera Software, I discussed this topic and at the moment the Norwegians have not yet come to any definite decision. Meanwhile, licenses for Opera Mobile were distributed to all university students free of charge, and this policy seems to be maintained now. So we can say that the chances of seeing a completely free version of Opera Mobile are now regarded as 50/50 with a clear tendency towards a positive decision.
