Ubuntu gaming performance is almost on par with Windows 8.1

For a long time Linux could not compete with Windows on desktops, and one of the reasons for this was the lack of performance in games and the lack of popular games for Linux. Recently, the situation is beginning to change dramatically. Thanks to Steam, many of the best games have become available under Linux, and the lag of the Linux drivers of modern video cards from Windows also goes down in history.

Great testing of 13 different AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce video cards and comparing the performance of video games under Ubuntu Linux and Windows 8.1 shows a very close result in almost all tests, and some GPUs even work under Ubuntu faster!

The test machine is an Intel Core i7 4770K "Haswell" processor on an ECS Z87H3-A2X EXTREME motherboard, 16 GB RAM, SSD 240 GB OCZ Vertex 3.

In the OpenGL-game OpenArena v0.8.8 at a resolution of 1920 × 1080, the GTX 680, HD 6870 and HD 7950 show the best result for Ubuntu.

In Xonotic with high-quality settings at a resolution of 2560 × 1600, NVIDIA cards under Ubuntu are not at all inferior to Windows 8.1.

In some popular tests from the GpuTest v0.5.0 suite, the systems under Linux are much inferior, but in the TessMark test they look quite equal.
