Chris Urmson, head of Google’s autonomous vehicle project, spoke at a RoboBusiness conference in a report on the results of the
Self-Driving Vehicles report that the sensors and software The software as a whole copes with driving better than even professional drivers involved in testing.
Google has been conducting a testing program for autonomous cars (Lexus and Prius are participating) in California, Nevada and Florida since 2010 - the laws of these states allow such studies. In the course of this program, data were collected and analyzed, which were recorded in two reports.
The first of these is devoted to the comparison of the quality of the movement of a car running software and running professional drivers. The data of the report allowed Urmson to draw the following conclusion: when a car was driven by a person, the braking and acceleration was carried out more sharply than when the movement of the car was controlled by an automated system. The second report is similar to the first, but analyzed the issue of a safe distance between cars - as it turned out, in this case, the electronics also surpassed the person: in general, the sensors observed a safer distance. All this allowed Urmson to declare that "
Our car itself moves more smoothly and more safely than when it is driven by trained professionals ."
Despite the fact that Urmson confirmed that his company is in constant contact with the main manufacturers, he refused to give more definite predictions about the technology’s entry into the real market, limiting himself to general phrases. At the same time, he made a curious observation that the presence in the future of an autonomous control auto system means a completely different measure of responsibility in the inevitable road incidents, attributing to the auto information collection system the role of an original, incorruptible witness who “sees everything”, unlike living witnesses .
')
At the same time, the charismatic Elon Musk
believes that the creation of fully autonomous cars is actually a very difficult task, but nevertheless promises an auto-pilot on her electric cars already in 2016.
