Dropbox-light or my desktop on the Internet

A long time ago, 3 years ago, I learned that some browsers began to support dragging and dropping FileAPI files . This news impressed me a lot and the idea of ​​a simple service was born in my head. You need a desktop site: you go in, drag a file from your computer to the site. You find yourself behind another computer - you download the file.

No sooner said than done. We find the script “ajax file upload drag & drop”, test, finish. Registration form, several useful features - everything can be used.

I used it myself, I was inspired even more, I wanted to share my instrument with the world, I even fantasized that now I would have a startup. But then I remembered that there is such a wonderful thing as Dropbox . And there is Google Drive and Yandex.Disk . He laughed at his start-up fantasies and left the site as it is: “So what if the dropbox interface is a bit more complicated. But they have plenty of space, and there are already a lot of users, and security, etc., etc. With such giants it is useless. And the interface will probably be simplified soon. ”

3 years have passed, and I caught myself that I continued to use my site. In total for one simple task in different variations. Previously, I used a flash drive or email for this task. The task is to “take the file with you” or “make it so that the file can be accessed if there is Internet access”.

Why not Dropbox?

But I don't like it anymore. I do not want the program. I want a site.

Why not Yandex.Disk?

Step 1 is skipped - I already had an account on Yandex.

Step 2. Welcome window

Beautiful and understandable, there are no questions, but I already want to download files quickly. Where to click?

Steps 3 and 4

Once - click "my drive" on the left.
Two - click "download" on top.
Three - a window appears. Everything is logical and understandable. The only negative is a small area for dragging a file, you need to aim. No desktop freedom.

PS It is fair to say that the welcome window can be closed and it will no longer appear, so the number of steps for downloading the file is reduced. And along with a bunch of Yandex advantages, this makes Yandex.Disk a good choice, but I don’t have enough of a large white space in the Disk interface, where I can put a file at any point.

Google drive will not be considered - there are about the same problems.

As you have probably guessed, I decided to share my happiness with the site with my website.

Briefly about the opportunities and unique competitive advantages

1. Very little space - only 30 MB per user.
2. Insecure - do not store backups, password files and too personal photos here. The service is as secure as my hosting (linode.com).
3. No ftp and downloads - there will be problems with large files.
4. There is no program to synchronize with the computer file system.

I would like to mention the main advantage, and probably the only one: using my website, it is convenient to solve the simple task described above — drag and drop files onto the Internet.

Startup, explosive growth in the number of users, monetization

Now the site has only 40 GB for everyone, i.e. enough for 1000-1500 users. I think I can add as much again without much damage to the family budget, but, of course, this is not enough.

If the project is of interest to more people (which I really hope for), I will advertise. For those who wish, I can make paid accounts with a large amount of available space (with a very reasonable fee, a little more than the cost of disk space on the hosting).
