Github for governments

From the GitHab team, there are more and more statements that joint software development is not the only scenario for using their website. Tom Preston-Werner, co-founder and CEO of Github recently stated : “We want to make Github so flexible and simple that lawyers, officials, anyone can use it ... Now we are constantly discussing with many people how they use Github and how else you can use it. ”

There are already several examples of using Github not for developing software, but for writing books, laws, publishing datasets. And on October 15, a government.github.com section was opened on Github, specifically designed for projects related to e-government, open data, civil initiatives and lawmaking. The list of government agencies, public organizations, governments and municipalities that use the Githab already has dozens of titles.

Since Github’s main purpose is software development, most of the projects are related to programming to one degree or another - these are websites of organizations, sets of open data, and so on. But at its core, Github is a tool for working with text, no matter what the text is. The Github team sees its future in becoming something like Wikipedia, but not for describing and cataloging existing knowledge, but for creating new, for creativity and original research in the best sense of these words.

Github grows at a very fast pace. If in 2011 the millionth user registered on it, now there are more than four million active users and eight million open repositories on Github. Gitkhab has 209 employees. In the summer of 2012, the Andreessen Horowiz Venture Fund invested a huge amount in the project - $ 100 million.
