A few ideas and thoughts about how and how to show the numbers and other information of this kind, which I gathered, playing in Need For Speed: Most Wanted 5-1-0 (edition for PSP, there is a sin) - I play);)
While playing, I constantly saw a lot of numbers, for example - the time during which I traveled the circle or the whole race. Looking at this number, for example 02:18:37, I often thought - so what? What does 2 minutes 18 seconds 27 milliseconds mean? Is it a lot or a little?
It is not so difficult to understand that this information in isolation from other data of the same type loses any meaning at all. The same can be said, for example, of the condition of 18,000,000
CFA francs - I have no idea how much it is in rubles and I do not know how much money other Africans have. And if they tell me that someone has set a new world record in swimming for some distance - 21 seconds, then I would not be surprised either. Because I do not know how much cooler it is. ;)
But if they tell me about the person that he is in 8th place in the Forbes rating, or about the fact that the new record in swimming is 2 seconds ahead of the old one - then yes, it is easier for me to imagine what the trick is.
Never write anything that cannot be compared without an extra search (yes, I could find the CFA franc rate - but do I need it? I'm lazy).
For example, on the main Habr:
Rating
I'm smart 10194.04
Web development 8016.42
User Interface Design and Usability 6587.54
...
As you can see, quite informative. It is immediately evident that being clever is more popular than web development [almost] as much as this web development is more popular than design.
But imagine if the main page would be only: "The most popular blog is I am smart, with a rating of 10194.04." The phrase carries useful information, but in isolation from other meanings, it is equivalent to the inscription "The most popular blog - I am smart." Just like Lebedev's - divide by 2;)
But this rating can be made more convenient:
I'm smart 10194.04
Web development 8016.42
User Interface Design and Usability 6587.54
Linux for all 5552.94
learn to work 5175.75
Startups 4678.38
Google 4529.68
Apple 4397.57
Humor on Habrahabr 4355.99
Project "Office" 4032.34
Exhaust 3707.50
Web 2.0 3667.52
Project Management 3518.61
Design 3429.83
Fire Fox 3267.74
It can be seen that f (place → rating) decreases more and more slowly, i.e. the gap between the values is reduced. Therefore, when looking at neighboring numbers, for example 3518.61 and 3429.83, you cannot tell immediately what the difference is between them (in general, if the first digits in the “long” numbers are the same, it seems that the numbers are approximately equal). And if you do this:
I'm smart 10194.04
Web development 8016.42 -2177.62
User Interface Design and Usability 6587.54 -1428.88
Linux for all 5552.94-1034.60
learn to work 5175.75 -377.19
Startups 4678.38 -497.37
Google 4529.68 -148.70
Apple 4397.57 -132.12
Humor on Habrahabr 4355.99-41.58
Office project 4032.34 -323.65
Exhaust 3707.50 -325.84
Web 2.0 3667.52 -39.98
Project Management 3518.61 -148.91
Design 3429.83 -88.78
Fire Fox 3267.74 -162.09
It is better? It became clear what the gap is, what we should strive for, what is more popular and how much? :)
Yes, and align the columns of numbers always right. So that the ranks match.
