Opera: missed opportunities. Are they missing?

Opera browser is in many ways superior to its counterparts in the shop, while on the whole its share on the world market remains negligible. Probably many of us wondered why. And indeed: tabs (tabs), mouse gestures, an identification switch, a dedicated download window, blocking pop-up windows and filtering page elements using JavaScript, an integrated search block, page scaling, saving sessions - all these functions were first implemented in Opera. Yes, and this browser appeared in those years when IE has not yet occupied the lion’s share of computers in the world. So what's the deal?

An article was recently published in one of the blogs in which the author tried to find an answer to this popular question. His opinion - Opera's interface is too different from the “conventional”, or rather, from the familiar to many IE or FF (almost copied the appearance of IE). It is this factor (as the author of the article considers) that caused the Opera browser to be firmly stuck in alternative positions, rather than taking leading positions.

Well, there is a certain rational grain in these conclusions. But let me disagree with the author of the above article. Of course, the familiarity of the interface is an important detail, but you should not think that the option proposed by the developers of IE is the only correct and most ergonomic one. In fact, many things can be implemented in a more convenient way, and, by the way, the same Opera browser confirms this. When developing the interface, Opera authors are guided by common sense and logic (this is a question of why the site navigation buttons are not located on the main panel, like everyone else, but in the working window), which often gives good results: work in Opera (of course, slightly getting used to to the placement of interface elements) is much more convenient and faster than in other browsers.

In addition, there is another argument in favor of Opera: if all browsers have a similar interface, how will improvements appear in this area? After all, it is naive to think that the interface “under IE” is the pinnacle of design ideas. The ideal is unattainable, but only in comparison of various variations and in constant search that very path to the ideal is born. And the market share ... Yes, and a clown with it, with this share: after all, the main thing is that the browser is constantly evolving, and the fact that even the funds that come into the company with 1% of the global browser market can be enough for this active development just please. I think that hardly any of Opera users dreams of the world domination of his favorite browser, and the fact that he plays the role of innovator and pioneer is quite honorable and worthy of respect.
