Huge iPads or Tiny Journalists? Many have asked this question after Fox News published a video in which several analysts sitting in front of large touch interfaces are visible. In fact, these are 55-inch screens running on Windows 8 (soon, apparently, on Windows 8.1), and they look damn futuristic.
Fox News secret equipment? Something that Samsung has collected for the company? No, the company confirmed to TechCrunch that this is only Microsoft's PPI technology, deployed in practice. Microsoft's PPI solutions business began with the acquisition of Perceptive Pixel in July 2012. Now, after this acquisition, Microsoft is the manufacturer of the largest touchscreens in the world - PPI displays are also produced in the 80-inch version. ')
Here, for the sake of interest, is a picture of old Microsoft employee Craig Mundi showing a PPI display on TechForum on the Microsoft campus this March:
And in this photo we see the Shepah Smith team using its own PPI screens:
According to Smith, Fox News can optionally transfer images between displays "over the air." The frames that can be seen above (black and white) are designed so that the displays fit the color scheme of the new studio.
Apart from the fact that the use of these displays is simply convenient for Fox News, this is also an opportunity for Microsoft: the company has found an early commercial application for the technology.
The price of the 55-inch multitouch model is approximately $ 7,000. After going through several product cycles, these PPI displays can be quite affordable for most of us. In the meantime, for the first time in a long time, I envy Fox News.
