Alabama University proposes to launch a “womb” ship into orbit to fight dangerous space bodies.

Yes, the threat of an asteroid falling to Earth is very real, and this threat has been engaged by scientists / military for a long time. Currently, there are several projects to combat dangerous space bodies. For example, one of the projects involves the launch into orbit of something like a net for asteroids, a satellite that can intercept asteroids, leading them to a safe orbit. Alabama University proposed another project - to remove asteroids from a dangerous orbit by a laser. But for this, according to university experts, there is no need to launch a network of laser satellites into orbit.

As for such a network, this proposal was made by the University of Scotland. Then it was supposed to launch into orbit several satellites with solid-state laser installations capable of deflecting asteroids (and not only from orbit). Deviation will be made due to the heating of the asteroid, and not because the laser being installed will be able to destroy the space body.

So, in the University of Alabama they propose to launch not many satellites into orbit, but one. True, this satellite will play the role of something like a ship-womb, and in case of a threat to our planet, the satellite will launch several small satellites, which will jointly act on the asteroid with the same laser systems. At first, smaller satellites will create a 3D model of the asteroid, identifying vulnerable parts of the celestial body. Then the satellites together will begin to influence the asteroid with laser beams, synchronizing with each other.

After each laser “strike” the satellites will send new data to the mother ship, which will calculate the new trajectory of the celestial body. If the orbit is safe, then the satellites will return to the womb.
