The project, which began in 2007, asked a provocative question: Is it possible to program the robot the same cognitive skills that a young child has? The answer to this question is iCub - the most humanoid robot of all.
Like a man, he can see, feel, and learn. The creators of iCub believe that open source software and hardware make this robot platform unique. Designed in Italy at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) as part of the EU RobotCub project, the iCub is used in 20 different laboratories across the continent.

Now scientists from the University of Twente (UT) plan to raise the abilities of the robot to a new level. The main goal of the iCub project is to promote “Embedded cognition” (body-related cognition), an area of artificial intelligence that focuses on integrating the brains of machine software with the hardware that allows it to interact with the outside world. One of the ways to achieve this goal, according to Frank Van der Velde, a scientist from UT, is to add an artificial brain, based on electronic circuits, reflecting the location of neurons in the human brain. He believes that this can improve the visual perception of the robot.
Another way is to facilitate human interaction. The latest version of iCub has more sensitive fingers and skin, allowing you to feel touch and strength. This “makes interaction with people much more natural,” says van der Velde.
His goal is to continue learning iCub, how people act. This will ensure "that robots actually gather knowledge by focusing on a particular object or person," he says. “In areas such as healthcare and nursing, such robots can play an important role. For example, in ten years you can see a blind man walking with a guide. ”
