MacBook Air compared to other ultraportable laptops

The new Apple MacBook Air is Apple's first noticeable initiative on the ultraportable notebook market, clearly standing out for its low weight and compact size. We decided to compare it with not less decent computers of this class from Sony, Lenovo, Fujitsu and other manufacturers.

MacBook Air: thin and light

The computer was quickly introduced in Russia. It upsets the fact that it will cost the Russians a thousand dollars more than the Americans. The main advantages of this laptop, which immediately draw attention, are a good design and low weight (less than 1.5 kg).

In addition to low weight and “extreme subtlety”, Apple advertises a few more “chips” of its laptop. The multi-touch technology thanks to an enlarged touch panel with advanced features allows you to control your computer not only with simple touches, but also with gestures.

Screen size with LED-backlit - 13.3 inches. The image is quite bright and clear.

In addition to the USB 2.0 port and headphone output, the computer has a micro-DVI port, which allows you to get DVI, VGA, composite and S-video outputs using appropriate adapters.

Memory capacity - 2 GB. The amount of built-in hard drive - 80 GB. In addition, it is possible to additionally equip a computer with a solid-state hard disk (based on flash memory) with a capacity of 64 GB.

An important factor for good performance was the use of Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz processors. Moreover, a special modification of the processor is used that can fit in small notebook sizes.

A modern mobile computer in the world of multimedia technology simply cannot do without an integrated webcam. In this case, the iSight camera is used.

Do not forget about the battery life. Apple promises up to 5 hours of productive work without the need to disconnect from wireless networks.

There is no optical drive, but this is not surprising for mobile computers of this class. The laptop has only three connectors - for headphones, USB 2.0 and Mini-DVI. No ethernet network connector.

It is pleasantly surprised by a rather large keyboard, the same as that of other Apple laptops, and a rather large screen size - 13.3 inches, which is a lot for ultra-portable laptops. The screen resolution is also quite decent - 1280x800.

Fujitsu Q2010 - a close competitor

Despite the fact that these models on the market for several years, they may well compete with the MacBook Air. The Fujitsu laptop is almost as thin as Apple’s new product, but has a smaller display — 12.1 inches.

Q2010 has an integrated wireless interface Wi-Fi 802.11abg, Bluetooth 2.0 and a sufficient number of ports and connectors. At the same time, it is also lighter than the MacBook Air - it weighs only 1 kg. The laptop comes in two versions - with a hard drive of 40 GB or 80 GB.

Lenovo Thinkpad X61 - today's champion

X61 has become one of the most popular ultraportable corporate laptops and is deservedly the leader of ratings of many publications. This is a fast laptop with a long battery life.

This computer is a bit heavier than the MacBook Air and our considered Fujitsu competitor is 1.63 kg. But it has the highest performance. Lenovo notebook traditionally has a comfortable keyboard and a reasonable price when using Intel Santa Rosa processors. It should be added that the screen size of the Thinkpad X61 is slightly smaller than that of the Air - 12.1 inches.

Sony VGN-TZ150N / B - a worthy design rival

This ultra-portable can adequately compete with the MacBook Air in the field of design. VGN-TZ150N / B has a stylish glossy keyboard that resembles piano keys, weighs only 1.22 kg. The 11.1-inch LED-backlit screen features high brightness. And the resolution of 1366x768 makes all the details of the image very clear, which allows not only to comfortably examine the photos, but also to clearly see even the smallest text.

The keys are slightly raised above the keyboard plane, which may be more convenient when typing blindly. Another feature of the notebook is two separate slots for SD and Memory Stick, which allow you to work with them simultaneously.
