The history of drives in advertising. Part 1: 1956-1991

Most recently, I was glad to win an A-Data external hard disk with 500 GB worth 3900 rubles, and now it costs two times less. And 33 years ago, for 10 MB, you would have to give a few thousand dollars ...

IBM got the first place in this area, having released the IBM 350 disk storage in 1956. Storage was an essential component of the IBM 305 RAMAC (Random Access Memory Accounting). The volume of such a "disk" was 5 million 6-bit characters - that is, 3.75 MB, if you count in 8-bit. Weight - about 1 ton. Inside the repository - 50 discs of 24 inches in diameter (610 mm) with hundreds of recording surfaces.

The cost of IBM 305 RAMAC in 1957: $ 3,200 per month ($ 26,620 in 2013). The 1956 RAMAC commercial:

In 1977, disk systems from System Industries amazed their own capabilities: 80 megabytes could be purchased for less than 12 thousand dollars, and as many as 300 megabytes cost less than 20 thousand.

The first 5.25-inch hard drive was released in 1980 by the well-known Seagate company - ST 506 with a capacity of 5 MB. To connect the drive, three cables were required: for transmitting control signals, for transferring data to another drive, and for power. It cost about $ 1500.

The method of modified frequency modulation, which was then widely used in floppy drives, was used to encode information.

This hard disk played an important role in history: a number of companies took disks on the basis of ST-506 as standard. IBM also chose this hard drive for IBM PC / XT and IBM PC / AT .

This dinosaur from 1980 cost $ 4,495. Advertising a little deceived the viewer - you need to read the text in order to understand - the price is for updating the system to the desired volume, and not for a new set.

In 1981, a turning point came: Seagate released the ST-412, a 10 MB hard drive that used the RLL method for recording. The method added a disk up to 50% of the data transfer rate due to more dense data packing.

In 1984, Seagate continues to increase the amount of hard drives: the ST225 drive holds 20 megabytes.

Since 1987, Seagate has been manufacturing hard drives ranging from 20 to 60 megabytes, already 3.5 inches.

In 1991, Seagate launches the first 2.5 "inch hard drive. Capacity - as much as 40 megabytes! At that time it was quite a lot ... It will be years, and this volume will be small even for a regular cell phone.

image

In the same year, the Barracuda series started. This 3.5 "inch hard drive was the first drive with a spindle speed of 7200 rpm.

image

In 1990, the maximum amount of hard drive has already reached 320 megabytes. Thus, from 1956 to 1990, the volume increased 64 times, and the size decreased hundreds of times. It will take a little more than 20 years and the volume will reach 4.0 TB. But this is another story, which I will discuss in the next section.
