Minecraft shoved the whole UK

It turns out that in the UK State Mapping Service (Ordnance Survey) there are also Minecraft fans. To demonstrate what can be done with open cartographic data, they carried out a grand experiment - and imported the entire territory of the country into the game world.



22 billion Minecraft blocks correspond to more than 220,000 km ^{2 of the} territory of Great Britain and the surrounding islands. Northern Ireland did not hit the map because its organization is being taken by another organization.



Each developer can repeat the experiment of the UK National Cartographic Service, using open data sets and tools .

The map import program in Minecraft processes areas of 100x100 km, each of them is loaded with information about the height of areas above sea level from the OS Terrain 50 database, then raster images are downloaded from OS VectorMap District maps. The color of each square of 20x20 pixels determines which material the Minecraft block should be from. For example, the roads were made of emeralds, pumpkins and gold, the coastal strip was made of sand, the forest was made of leaves, the meadows were made of grass, the city buildings were made of bricks, and the water was made of water.



Each block corresponds to an area of ​​about 50 m ² .
