Apple Touch ID - fingerprint scanner in iPhone 5S hacked
Not even three days had passed since the launch of the iPhone 5S with a fingerprint scanner, as a biometrics specialist “Starbug” from the Chaos Computer Club managed to fool the fingerprint reader and unlock the device.
“In fact, the Apple sensor only has a higher resolution than other fingerprint scanners, so all it took to deceive him was to increase the detail in the production of the dummy,” Starbug explained.
To fool the sensor, only available materials were used: Starbug photographed a fingerprint in 2400 DPI resolution, cleaned up the image on the computer and printed it on a transparent film on a laser printer with a resolution of 1200 DPI. To complete the fabrication of a finger model, it remains to cover the film with a printed print with latex or wood glue and let it dry - this is, in general, the standard method of making false fingerprints.
