Microsoft is relentless, and Windows 8 continues to attack. Packaging
The laptop is packed in the now traditionally decorated box, 80% consisting of recycled cardboard, and all the inscriptions and graphics are applied with soy ink. I got a pre-sale sample, so besides the laptop itself, there were two power supplies (for āRussianā and āAmericanā sockets), a cloth for wiping the screen and an adapter from DVI to VGA. The necessary step, given the lack of a VGA connector in this model.

Appearance

Stylish design and solid weight immediately inspire respect. The cover is made of brushed aluminum, in the center the ASUS logo proudly flaunts. The interior of the case on which the keyboard is located is also aluminum, but already silver. The bottom of the case is made of high-quality matte black plastic. All together forms an elegant three-layer black and silver design.

At the bottom of the case, there is only a ventilation grill and mesh slotted outlets for the two built-in speakers in the front.

On the right side are a card reader, a combined audio jack, a USB 2.0 port and a DVD drive.

The Kensington lock slot, power connector, LAN, HDMI and two USB 3.0 ports are on the left side. Given the sufficient size of the device, all connectors are located far enough from each other and should not interfere with the connection to adjacent outputs.

The entire inner surface of the notebook lid is a solid glass panel that includes the screen itself and the black border. When opened, the laptop appears in a beautiful silver-black style. Even a huge comfortable touchpad with the support of "multitouch" looks like aluminum. The keys themselves are made of black tactilely pleasant plastic, have a small, soft stroke. Indicators of work, power and hard drive are right under the aluminum "table top". They are dim light-green LEDs, and quite often you have to ālook under the tableā to understand, for example, whether a hard drive is active.

In the upper left corner there is a power button with an engraved symbol, illuminated from the inside by a white LED. To the right of the button are white LEDs for wireless connection and sleep mode.

In the upper right corner of the keyboard is an additional button that launches the handy ASUS VivoBook full-screen utility, which contains a set of some important notebook settings.

Screen
As already indicated in the specification, the laptop is equipped with a 14-inch touch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The screen is glossy, while having a very good oleophobicity, so that it will not have to wipe it too often. The screen is edged with black margins. The webcam's eye is located above the screen, and to the left of it, the operation indicator is invisible for the time being.
The screen uses a TN matrix with good image quality. Alas, there is a generic feature of TN-matrices:

In its area, the screen is comparable to a tablet, and touch control is much more convenient here than on screens with a smaller diagonal. It is more convenient not in the sense of ābetter implementedā, but in the sense of the ratio of the sizes of the average finger and objects in Windows 8 on a 14-inch screen. In all other respects nothing to complain about, the sensory properties of this laptop are no worse than those of tablets.
Sound
As always, the sound quality of ASUS laptops is at its best. Built-in speakers are good for watching movies and games, and for listening to music, I recommend using good headphones.
Performance
For a start, you can familiarize yourself with more detailed technical data of different subsystems:

Despite the traditional speed of the spindle for laptops, the hard drive showed very good results in writing and reading speed:

The time from switching on to requesting the OS password was 30 seconds, waking up from sleep mode - 2 seconds.
Due to the presence of a processor, 6 GB of RAM and an additional video card based on the GeForce 740M, the laptop does not demonstrate any brakes not only when watching FullHD movies, but also makes it quite comfortable to play 3D shooters, though not the latest ones.

Benchmark 3DMark11 results:

Duration of work
Surfing the Internet via Wi-Fi, with clicks on the links about every 10-20 seconds, the average screen brightness: 5 hours and 15 minutes.
View FullHD-movies (1920 * 1080), the average screen brightness: 3 hours and 20 minutes.
The total battery charging time was 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Conclusion
Dimensions and weight do not allow to carry this laptop to the class of devices "always take with me." Rather, it is a stylish, powerful and versatile helper for home and office. Its capabilities are more than enough to solve business problems and the vast majority of home entertainment. This laptop in the older configuration with a Core i7, 8 GB of RAM and a 750 GB hard drive will be available in retail stores for 34,800 rubles.
