Ideas for open data projects and the nearest hackathons and competitions for which you can still catch

You probably know what is going on now, many open-ended competitions begin and begin, and many conduct hackathons.

For example, Yandex Hackathon will be held tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and it’s not too late to register, our friends in St. Petersburg spend their Hackathon on October 5-6 .

Hackatons are a wonderful format to get acquainted with the topic, try yourself and do something simple and interesting. On the hackathon, however, it is rarely possible to make a complex product and even find an opportunity for monetization. If you are doing something big or you want to do it, we extend our Apps4Russia contest until October 1 and look forward to receiving your applications.

Ideas

In the meantime, in order to make the search for ideas a little easier and, perhaps, to encourage them to think about their own ideas on open data - I have prepared a small selection of what we have collected.

  1. Games and deputies

Game Hot or Not on deputies. We take the list of deputies from the API - api.duma.gov.ru - a photo from duma.gov.ru and launch a twister with comparisons. We run hundreds of visitors to the site and get the most interesting statistics.

Ideally - a widget for implementation in media sites.

  2. Water quality monitoring

Take data on water quality in Moscow by districts and make an application for a mobile phone showing the quality of water in the area. The data is ready and is here - http://hubofdata.ru/dataset/moswaterquality-2013

  3. Russia in the world

Take data from the World Bank on Russia and visualize them clearly - for example - in the format of a "dashboard" or in comparison with other countries or by year. Data can be taken here - http://data.worldbank.org/country/russian-federation

  4. Visual budget

Take the code http://theopenbudget.org/ and visualize the budget of your area or city. Budgets are published on their official sites.

  5. Monuments in your pocket

Take data on parks and cultural objects of your city / region and make an application for Android, iPad, iPhone or Windows Phone. Add there the possibility of feedback and the service "Find the nearest monument."

  6. Civil Grant Control

Take the base of recipients of grants of the public chamber here - http://hubofdata.ru/dataset/oprf-grants-winners-2013 , with the help of several volunteers to collect data on organizations - is there a website, is there a public reporting of past years and make a rating operators on the transparency of funding organizations.

    There is a site - +1 point

There is a public report - +1 point

There are all public financial reports - +3 points

There is a report of the organization in the register of NGOs of the Ministry of Justice - +3 points

    and so on.

If it is difficult to do for all organizations - you can do, for starters, for the 20 largest recipients of grants from each of the operators

  7. Search pharmacies and hospitals

Take data on hospitals and pharmacies in Moscow is on data.mos.ru and make a very simple service to search for the nearest pharmacy and telephone numbers of hospitals (for example, if a relative was taken to hospital). At a more advanced level - do filters for pharmacies operating around the clock. It is possible as a site, it is possible as a mobile application.

  8. Lazy deputies

On the basis of open data and API of the State Duma to make a rating of the most lazy deputies - those who did not make a single bill during the work - http://api.duma.gov.ru/

  9. City Control Panel

For example, how it is done here http://citydashboard.org/london/

Not necessarily immediately in real time, but in order to regularly update. To do this, you can collect data for your city - from open data portals or from other sources. Decide to do - tell you where to get them.

And those ideas that were previously

This, of course, not all. Many ideas we collected and continue to collect.

And a huge number of applications created at various open data contests around the world. It’s impossible to list them all at a reasonable time, so just have a look.

Where to find data?

There is a lot of open data, it is impossible to list everything

As well as world data where there is information about Russia:

Interesting APIs:

Many of the applications and ideas are quite suitable for participating in Apps4Russia, and many others for participating in hackathons.

If there are any questions where to find the data - address them to me. I will either answer immediately or try to find out where they may be.
