The data, according to journalists, is obtained first-hand - Spiegel representatives saw top-secret NSA documents related to receiving data from mobile devices.

Unfortunately, the article does not have a lot of detailed information on how the NSA receives data. It is also unclear whether this organization can receive data remotely from any device, or else the data is retrieved when working directly with the smartphone.
