Google is going to
accelerate the implementation of a plan to fully encrypt communications between its data centers. As representatives of the company said in an interview with The Washington Post, they do it to protect against listening to underwater communication channels, what the NSA does.
Google has data centers around the world, and your letters are stored simultaneously in several data centers, ”
says Chris Sogoyan, an expert at the American Civil Liberties Union. “Every bit of information will now be encrypted, so if the government listens on this fiber, they will not receive the information.”
Since 2005, the submarine
“Jimmy Carter” is most likely engaged in the installation of splitters on underwater communication channels. Recently, programs for capturing traffic from underwater backbones have attracted the attention of the general public through the publication of Snowden documents.

Fiber protection is not the only attack vector that Google and other Internet companies need to protect themselves from if they want to keep their users' data intact. Encryption of communication channels between data centers will protect only against wiretaping of the fiber, but not from direct embedding on servers and the compromising of cryptographic keys.
“Google removes the threat of data interception one at a time,” Sogoyan comments.
“This is an arms race,” said Eric Grosse, vice president of information security development at Google. “We believe that federal agencies are among the most skilled players in this game.”
