The French company produces a prototype of a smartphone that can be charged from solar and artificial light.

The French company SunPartner Group is in the process of releasing an industrial prototype of a device made using the Wysips technology (What You See Is Photovoltaic Surface, it has been known since 2011), which may well be a killer feature for the mobile market, since it can provide almost continuous process of charging the battery of a mobile device. And as a “solar” battery, a smartphone screen is used, and energy can be extracted from both natural sunlight and artificial.

The company's technical solution is as follows: a thin layer of semi-cylindrical lenses is located above the same thin layer of photoelectric material based on CIGS (copper-indium selenide (CIS) alloy with copper-gallium selenide (CGS); both layers have a thickness of less than 0.5 mm), which ensures the already known process: the light is transmitted by a layer of lenses and converted into electrical energy.

The main advantage here is that the resulting material (brand name Wysips Crystal) can transmit 90% of the light and is invisible to the naked eye. Moreover, according to the manufacturer, the material does not affect the brightness of the screen, the contrast, the angle of view - in other words, does not cause any inconvenience for the ultimate owner of a smartphone or tablet. It can be built into the screens made by existing technologies - LCD, OLED, and even ordinary glass.

To imagine what is at stake in terms of time frames, this can be illustrated by the following numbers: early versions of Wysips technology could provide 2.5 mW of energy per square centimeter of the screen surface, which corresponded to approximately two to four minutes of the call for every 10 minutes of the screen under the light. Later versions of the technology have already reached a more significant figure - 10 mW per cm 2 , which is already about 16 minutes of battery life during a call for every 10 minutes of screen illumination (including artificial light).

At the moment, SunPartner, working with Chinese electronics manufacturer TCL Communications, is busy releasing a prototype device that, in addition to the usual battery charging methods, can be “light charged” and which is likely to become one of the technologies in Alcatel One French smartphones Touch. Year of release of the prototype is called next year.
