About two and a half weeks ago, the final version of
KDE 4.0 was released , which received a new user interface and improved internal architecture. KDE 4.0 includes the Konqueror browser, the Kate text editor, the Marble globe map, the KWin window manager, the KOffice office suite, the new Dolphin file manager, and various other applications. But it turns out that only Linux itself decided not to stop the development and is expected to port KDE 4.0 to Windows and Mac OS X.
Dolphin file manager on
WindowsThrough the official website of the KDE project it is already possible to
download a test version of the fourth version of KDE for Windows. Owners of Apple computers can
get a pre-version of KDE for Mac OS X via BitTorrent.
Kate text editor on Windows.Observers Ars Technica have already been able to
test the assembly of KDE 4.0 for Windows and were completely satisfied with its quality. Testers note that most applications are fully capable, although in some cases there are still problems with rendering and other various minor bugs. For example, Konqueror does not always correctly handle HTML code, and the Dolphin file manager could not find the path to the home directory. However, Kate's text editor and games that are part of KDE by default work on Windows without any visible problems.
It is assumed that porting KDE 4.0 to Windows and Mac OS X will provide greater freedom of choice for PC owners. In addition, by becoming accustomed to the popular open source desktop manager, users will be able to switch to the Linux software platform with less difficulty.
