Imagination will release server MIPS processors by the end of 2014

The British company Imagination Technologies, recently bought an American microprocessor developer MIPS Technologies , by the end of 2014 will release a new Warrior Series 5 processor based on new design and for new technological standards.
The novelty will cover every market segment, including the use in low-power servers (microservers).

This is part of a broader initiative to produce MIPS-compatible processors for products of different directions, including servers, tablets, smartphones and wearable computing devices.
“We intend to bring MIPS to all sectors of the market where processors are used in principle ,” said Hossein Yassai, CEO of Imagination.

In practice, this means tougher competition between the British Imagination and ARM Holdings, the latter is now the dominant player in the market of processors for smartphones and tablets, and in 2014 endeavors to enter the market for microservers .

“For us to become a significant player in the processor market means several years of hard work, but from the technology point of view, by the end of next year we will get a working chip, on the basis of which the upcoming decisions will be built ,” says Hossein Yassai.

The head of the company says that initially they considered MIPS as a solution only for smartphones and tablets, but now they are also ready to start working in the server direction.

Indeed, the 64-bit architecture of MIPS processors is more adapted for use in microservers (than the architecture of ARM processors), and this was previously discussed at Habré in the article: “The future of microservers on MIPS processors” - where a bold assumption was expressed:
What if the MIPS architecture can be revived using its full potential for the production of microservers, then in a few years we can see a cheap server rack filled with several thousand 1.5 GHz energy efficient MIPS processors running on LAMP software and comparable in power to mid-2000s supercomputers yo :)

And such processors may eventually become the technological standard for microservers if Imagination starts actively promoting them to the market!

What do you think about that?
