Two weeks before the end of the fundraising period on the Indiegogo crowdfunding site, the Mailpile web server developers
collected the necessary $ 100,000 to create it, and even more:
$ 120,631 is currently collected.
The essence of the project is to create an open mail web server that runs on users' personal computers and is completely protected from external interception using robust cryptography with OpenPGP support. It is designed for users who want to get rid of the problems associated with the use of Gmail, Hotmail and other services that are being listened to. People need built-in encryption, lack of advertising, speed, their own hosting, but at the same time they want to preserve the convenience of the interface, full-text search, tags, attachments and other familiar functions.
Such a simple concept provoked a lively response from the community, and it fairly quickly financed the development of the project. Now it's up to the implementation.
Obviously, in the current environment, users cannot trust large commercial companies that are not able to guarantee the privacy of private correspondence. Especially, if these companies are in US jurisdiction.

Small companies are also difficult to trust, because they can not withstand the pressure from the special services,
as happened with Lavabit and Silent Mail.
Mailpile software will be written by developers from Iceland - a state that is considered one of the most independent of the influence of American intelligence services. For example, in 2011, they disgracedly
expelled the FBI agents investigating the Wikileaks case
from the country .
Mailpile software release is expected in January 2014.
