French authorities want to connect everyone to optical fiber
By 2012, the French government hopes to connect about 4 million homes to the Internet via the FTTH high-speed fiber-optic channel (Fiber To The Home).
To accomplish the task, providers will have to overcome a number of problems, including obtaining the consent of local governments and building owners for cable laying. By the way, a start has already been made - in July of this year, about a hundred houses located in the suburbs of Paris connected to the FTTH network.
The maximum theoretical access speed over the FTTH channel is 2.5 gigabit / s.
